Art on Ukulele is a new audio-visual project organised by the team behind Art on a Postcard, the annual charity event that sees artists and designers create anonymous postcard prints, which are then auctioned in aid of the Hepatitis C Trust. This time they have collaborated with famed artists including Mick Rooney, Cathy Pilkington, and Allen Jones to paint various ukuleles to raise money for the charity.
Inspired by Mick’s beautifully painted ukulele in the 2016 RA Summer Exhibition, together they are working on an orchestra of ukuleles that are painted by some of the most loved artists from the industry. All ukuleles are handcrafted by UK’s well-known craftsperson Pete Howlett. Each ukulele has been given to artists including Mick Rooney RA, Ramiro Fernandez Suas, Cathy Pilkingon RA, Norman Ackroyd RA, Bill Jacklin RA, Anne Desmett RA, Allen Jones RA, Charlie Calder-Potts, David Inshaw RA and many more to paint in their own styles.
Each ukulele carries a unique style of the artist who’s painting it, hence, each instrument is exclusive and one-of-a-kind. The harmonious instruments will be showcased at a charity concert hosted by TV presenter Jon Snow. Even performances from The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain and special guests, The Massive Violins, and Clean Bandit will be seen at The Jazz Café on 12th September, followed by a Private View at Long & Ryle on 19th September. The auction of the ukuleles will be on 21st September and all the raised money will go to The Hepatitis C Trust.
