Vincent van Gogh’s famous Starry Night painting has been an inspiration for many artists and designers. This time New York-based artist Aja Kusick has recreated this beautiful painting, but with a pop culture twist. As part of her Starry Night Pop Culture series, Kusick inserted some famous pop culture icons into van Gogh’s renowned ‘The Starry Night (1889),’ which now can be seen in a refreshingly playful light.
In her painting series, you can see some of the famous cartoon characters like Winnie the Pooh, Spongebob Squarepants, Peanuts gang, Pokemon characters and more. The inspiration to start this series came from a lapse made by an educational blog that mistakenly attributed Trier’s painting of Eiffel Tower to van Gogh. But that’s not possible as van Gogh died nine years before the monument’s completion.
But Kusick found her inspiration in the disparity to paint more things that “van Gogh never” saw. Embracing his signature style with a ‘visceral swirl of color,’ Kusick has created many paintings with cartoon characters. Besides that, she also paints famous movie scenes from some memorable films likes Fight Club, Back to the Future, and Harry Potter series. Moreover, her stunning painting series even features some recognized landmarks around the world, including Taj Mahal, The Great Wall of China, Golden Gate Bridge and more.
Check out the collection of her paintings in the images below. You can also see more of her work on Instagram, Facebook, and official website.
