Don’t be fooled by this colourful picture, it is not painted using water colours. It is actually a beautiful thread painting by Meko Gelashvili, a 23-year-old Georgia-based embroidery artist. She is a very skilled needlewoman, who defines herself as an embroidery lover and often paints stunning landscapes using needle and thread.
To be precise she uses satin stitch embroidery and ribbon stitch embroidery techniques to create these colourful pictures. Each artwork takes one, two or even three weeks to finish, but final result is always worth all the hard work and patience. With different embroidery techniques, she recreates the effect of paint on different cloth pieces. Not only landscapes, but she has also thread painted some of the most famous works of art of all times, such as Van Gogh and Gustav Klimt paintings.
Watching a picture come alive stitch by stitch seems to be a magical experience, while your needle weaves in and out of a fabric. You may notice that none of her paintings are taken from any embroidery book – these are the images that caught her eye over the years and also the result of her imagination.
Her dedication to this delicate art form shows that she thoroughly enjoys creating her embroidered works of art. Check out the images below to have closer look at her mind-blowing thread paintings.
